CFA Institute Honors Three Individuals for Exemplary Contributions to the Investment Profession
Steadfast in its commitment to build a better world for investors, CFA Institute, the global association of investment professionals, announces the recipients of its annual awards bestowed by the CFA Institute Board of Governors for outstanding contributions to the investment profession. The Nominating Committee of the Board of Governors oversees the effort to recognize individuals in the CFA Institute community for their exemplary leadership, impactful contributions, longstanding service, and commitment to ethics and standards. Award presentations will be held over the next month in the United States, Indonesia and Australia, kicking off today with Carl Bacon, CIPM, who receives his award at the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®) Annual Conference in Scottsdale, Ariz.
This year’s honorees are:
- Carl R. Bacon, CIPM, Chief Adviser of StatPro Group PLC and founding member of the Investment Performance Council and GIPS®, receives the Leadership in Professional Ethics and Standards of Investment Award, in honor of Daniel J. Forrestal III, recognizing his pursuit of excellence in professional ethics and standards of practice and outstanding leadership in advocating the integrity and competence of the profession. (The presentation will take place at the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®) Annual Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, on September 11, 2019)
- Mark J. Lazberger, CFA, previously Chief Executive Officer at Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM) Limited and founding President of CFA Society Sydney, receives the Distinguished Service Award, in honor of Alfred C. “Pete” Morley, in recognition of his extraordinarily significant contribution to CFA Institute through leadership, stewardship, and outstanding service. (The presentation will take place at the CFA Societies® Australia Investment Conference in Sydney, Australia, on October 17, 2019)
- Thomas Robinson, PhD, CFA, CPA, CFP, CAIA, President and CEO of AACSB International and former Managing Director Education and Managing Director of the Americas at CFA Institute, receives the Outstanding Contribution to CFA Institute Education Programs Award, in honor of C. Stewart Sheppard, recognizing extraordinarily significant contributions to CFA Institute through leadership, exceptional stewardship, and outstanding service. (The presentation will take place at the 2019 APAC CFA Society® Leadership Conference in Bali, Indonesia, on September 21, 2019)

Carl R. Bacon, CIPM, a recognized expert and author on performance measurement issues, has been a key developer, promoter, and industry champion of the GIPS® standards for the past 25 years. Referred to as “the GIPS® Standards Ambassador,” Bacon promotes and frequently speaks on GIPS standards at industry conferences and events, teaches performance measurement throughout the world, and has authored books on performance measurement, as well as numerous articles and chapters for the CIPM® Program curriculum.
Bacon joined StatPro Group PLC as Chairman in 2000 and currently acts as chief adviser for the company. Previously, he served as Director of Risk Control & Performance for Foreign & Colonial Investment Management Ltd and Head of Performance for JP Morgan Investment Management Inc. and Royal Insurance Asset Management. He currently chairs the GIPS Executive Committee, was a founding member of the Investment Performance Council (IPC), and has been highly active in leadership positions with both for the last 20 years.
Mark J. Lazberger, CFA, was the founding President of CFA Society Sydney, Australia’s first member society. The society began in 1996 with 32 members and 150 candidates, and has grown to more than 2,700 members and 7,700 candidates today. Lazberger served two terms on the CFA Institute Board of Governors from 2012 to 2018, and has been a regular sponsor, speaker, Research Challenge judge, and committee member for CFA Societies Australia and Japan Society of Investment Professionals (now CFA Society of Japan).
As CEO of Colonial First State Global Asset Management and First State Investments, he led internal networking events for CFA charterholders, encouraged his staff to pursue the CFA charter and CFA Institute Investment Foundations® certificate by offering reimbursement to candidates, and was a large employer of CFA charterholders for more than 10 years. Lazberger previously served as President International of State Street Global Advisors (SSGA), President and CEO, State Street Japan, and established SSGA’s business in Australia.
Thomas Robinson, PhD, CFA, CPA, CFP, CAIA, is President and CEO of AACSB International, the world’s largest business education alliance and accreditor. Previously, Robinson spent seven years at CFA Institute, most recently as Managing Director of the Americas and Managing Director Education, overseeing a global team that produced and delivered educational content and programs for candidates, members, investment professionals, and universities. During his time as a volunteer prior to joining CFA Institute staff, Robinson was a founding member of the team that writes the Level II and part of the Level III CFA exams, and co-authored significant portions of the curriculum relating to financial reporting and analysis, equity, and private wealth management. He also served as co-executive sponsor of the CFA Institute Future of Finance Initiative.
Previously, Robinson served as a tenured accounting faculty member and administrator at the University of Miami, practiced public accounting and financial planning with Deloitte and Pritchett Dlusky & Saxe, Ltd. in Columbus, Ohio, and served as a consultant and investment advisor in wealth management, financial statement analysis, and valuation.
