Practitioners’ Insights: Global Insights in Forensics and Investing: Achieving Alpha through Avoidance of Common Mistakes

Overview

The post-Covid phase has been turbulent for global investment managers and asset owners. Although the monetary easing by Central Banks became a thing of the past in response to rising inflation, the slowdown in China has complicated matters further. Some sectors, such as technology, have had their own boom-and-bust cycles. Despite these challenges and mostly because of strong domestic inflows to equities, over the past couple of years, the Indian markets have done very well. Nevertheless, whether in a bull market or bear market, there is always a need for dispassionate evaluation by investors. For prudent investment decisions, a more nuanced approach and the ability to employ forensic analysis are needed to assess the quality of financial statements and earnings. This webinar will discuss some of these key issues and elaborate on how investors can think about employing a more structured thought process using forensic accounting to identify anomalies and investment opportunities. This information not only is useful in avoiding investment mistakes but also may be a source of generating significant alpha. The presenter will touch on issues like the pros and cons of available investment avenues and likely yields, the risk matrix, and the broader macro-opportunities for investments in India.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Gain an understanding of the major characteristics of forensic accounting and its utility in investments.
  • Discuss the pros and cons of investment avenues along with case studies about how to assess investment decisions, using these techniques.
  • Build an understanding of how to evaluate investment quality with a special focus on measures to gauge governance quality using forensics.
  • Discuss key observations from the current state of the market in India and the future trends investors may witness over the next few years, along with discussions on opportunities across industry sectors and market cap segments.
